Portsmouth was officially founded in 1180 by a Norman lord and granted its first royal charter in 1194 by King Richard I, recognising it as an important navy port. During the reign of Henry VIII, Portsmouth dockyard was built and established as The Royal Navy Dockyard, central in the Napoleonic Wars and World War I and II.

Today, Portsmouth is known for its rich naval history and maritime heritage, architecture and literary connections, famous as the birthplace of Charles Dickens.

The restaurant scene is diverse and vibrant, offering a wide range of culinary experiences to residents and visitors alike. Given its location on the coast, the city boasts numerous restaurants serving locally sourced seafood, a mix of casual dining cafes & bistros, and a vast array of international cuisines. From Michelin-star fine dining to family-friendly restaurants, there is something to suit every taste and budget.

Foodies can explore many street food markets including Southsea Food Festival and Love Southsea Market featuring live music and local, independent vendors serving every cuisine for foodies to enjoy.

Each area of Portsmouth has its own distinct personality and charm. Southsea, known for its seaside attractions and vibrant art scene, is home to South Parade Pier and Albert Road, lined with independent shops, restaurants and bars. Gunwharf Quays is popular as a modern waterfront shopping complex, housing the Spinnaker Tower – a 170-metre-tall tower offering panoramic views of Portsmouth.

Many restaurants pride themselves on offering fresh, seasonal dishes that showcase the best of the region's culinary offerings. Whether you're craving traditional British fare, exotic flavours, or innovative fusion cuisine, Portsmouth's restaurant scene has something for everyone to enjoy.
