York was established by the Romans in 71 AD and later invaded by Vikings in 866AD, a rich  heritage that is still celebrated today. York became an important Norman stronghold in 1066 after the Norman Conquest of England, inspiring the construction of the Gothic cathedral York Minster in the 13th century.

Today, York is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, its rich cultural heritage and the world-famous JORVIK Viking Centre which transcends people back in time to relive everyday Viking life.

The restaurant scene is diverse and vibrant, offering a wide range of culinary experiences to residents and visitors alike. The city boasts a mix of fine dining restaurants, independent bars and cafes and exotic street food. From Michelin-starred restaurants to cosy family-run establishments, there is something to suit every taste and budget.

Foodies can explore many amazing food markets, including York’s Food & Drink Festival where you can enjoy culinary delights, international cuisines and vibrant entertainment. Shambles Food Court is nestled within Shambles Market, rich in history and good food that caters to a wide range of palates.

Each area of York has its own distinct personality and charm. The Shambles, arguably the most famous street in York, is known for its medieval architecture and timber-framed buildings, now home to an array of boutiques, cafes and shops. York Minster and the Minster Quarter are major focal points in the city centre, the quarter lined with beautiful Georgian and medieval buildings and York Minster, one of the most magnificent cathedrals in Northern Europe which has attracted people from all over the world for 1000 years.
