Brunch like a champion at German Gymnasium. This Kings Cross venue hosted the indoor events for London's first Olympic Games in 1866, but these days it is a slick restaurant, bar and outdoor terrace.

In its first life, German Gymnasium was exactly just that- built in 1865 for the German Gymnastics Society, the building was England's first purpose-built gymnasium and was funded by London's German Community.

These days, it's one of the best Breakfast spots out there. German Gymnasium gives a nod to the site's German heritage with a range of Mittel-European dishes on the menu.

Located in the heart of King's Cross, German Gymnasium’s beautiful Grade 2 Listed historical building is divided into three parts: Our ground floor is home to the Grand Café, serving up your favourite German and Mittel-European fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Upstairs, our Restaurant takes diners on a journey around the lesser known aspects of German cuisine, with a sophisticated seasonal menu. Sharing the first floor with the Restaurant is the chic Meister Bar, the ultimate cocktail destination in Kings Cross, emulating the evening glamour you’d find in Berlin.

Start your day properly throughout the week with a hearty Breakfast in the Grand Cafe. We recommend trying one of their 'GG Specials', a variety of German-influenced dishes such as a Berlin or The German Gymnasium Breakfast- a feast of Scrambled eggs, Nürnberger sausages, Black Forest ham, tomato, mushrooms, potato rösti and sourdough toast

I've eaten here a few times now and have not been disappointed. I have never booked. I just hoped they had a table for 2 free. I would recommend booking if you've got your heart set on a meal here, wanting a larger table, or it's a special occasion as it's extremely busy. I'm absolutely fascinated by the building itself and the history behind it. Do research it, and I promise as you sit there looking around, it'll take on a whole different persona. Dining is available downstairs, up on the mezzanine, and outside if it's good weather or you're just brave. Upstairs also has a fabulous bar, I might have missed a train or two trying out the gin collection. The food is traditionally German, the coffee is superb, and the range of beverages is overwhelming. The downstairs bar is to be admired. The facilities are ample and clean, you can have your coat taken to the cloakroom on arrival, and they can accommodate your suitcases if you're travelling. The staff are all fabulous, friendly, helpful, and with a good sense of humour. The lovely chappy in charge on the door had us in stitches, a perfect welcome after a long day and a copious amount of rain.

Absolutely loved German Gymnasium! The setting in a heritage building added to the incredible experience, blending history with a modern vibe. The food was delicious—highlights were the Vienna schnitzel, Sachertorte, and the baked cheesecake. A fantastic spot for both the atmosphere and the food!

We had a fantastic dinner at the German Gymnasium with our two kids, and it was a memorable experience! The food was excellent—authentic German cuisine, which is a rare treat in the UK, especially when you're used to seeing mostly pub food. The dessert menu was impressively extensive, and everything we tried was delicious. The service was also top-notch; the staff was friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot for a family dinner. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy a unique and tasty meal in London!
