Sheffield’s first development as a small town dates back to 1066, following the Norman Conquest. During the Industrial Revolution, Sheffield grew as a centre for steel production and innovation fuelled by its abundant natural resources including coal and iron ore.

Today, Sheffield is known for its rich cultural scene, its sporting heritage with two major football clubs and its music contributions - being the birthplace of the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Pulp.

The restaurant scene is diverse and vibrant, offering a wide range of culinary experiences to residents and visitors alike. The city boasts a mix of cosy cafés, fine dining restaurants and international street food vendors. From independent, locally sourced establishments to Michelin-starred restaurants, there is something to suit every taste and budget.

Sheffield has been crowned the UK’s Foodie Capital! Foodies can explore Cambridge Street Collective, Europe’s largest purpose-built food hall with over 20 different vendors offering culinary delights from around the world.

Each area of Sheffield has its own distinct personality and charm. Sheffield has a growing Indie scene which is experienced in many areas of the city. Kelham Island was named one of the world's 50 coolest neighbourhoods and houses everything from indie shopping arcades to galleries and microbreweries. Sheffield City Centre is home to independent shops, restaurants and bars and popular attractions such as the Millennium Gallery and the Winter Garden.
