Back To All Oxford Venues

Oxford’s incredibly rich history dates back over a millennia ago, as a settlement by the Anglo-Saxons, known as “Oxnaford”. Nowadays, the city is known for its namesake University of Oxford, likely founded as early as the late 11th century, the oldest university in the English-speaking world. The city would later become a key component in various civil and military conflicts, including the famous town and gown riots, and its role as the Royalist Capital in the English Civil War.

Today, Oxford is known as one of the UK’s culture, research and academia capitals, with the University of Oxford attracting some of the best scholars, students, and researchers from across the globe. The city’s historic architecture attracts countless tourists each year, with stunning Medieval, Georgian, Tudor, and Saxon architecture. It also finds itself a hub for the literary greats, with J.R.R Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Lewis Carroll calling the city home.

The restaurant scene is diverse and vibrant, offering a wide range of culinary experiences to residents and visitors alike. The city boasts a great mix of modern and traditional styles, with classic English pubs, trendy cafés and brunch hubs, and even classy Michelin-starred establishments, there is something to suit every taste and budget.

Each area of Oxford has its own distinct personality and charm. The city centre may be first to mind and is where you’ll find many of the city’s most iconic landmarks and attractions, including the University of Oxford’s colleges, the Bodleian Library, Radcliffe Camera, and the Sheldonian Theatre. Jericho is just north of the city centre, and is known for its trendy and vibrant atmosphere, with a mix of independent shops, cafes, restaurants, as well as the Phoenix Picturehouse, one of the oldest cinemas in the UK.
